Bitcoin Faces Four Headwinds as It Enters Historically Strong October

Bitcoin enters October, historically one of its strongest months, facing four potential headwinds that could affect its price performance. The cryptocurrency has closed higher in 10 of the last 13 Octobers with a median gain of 12.73%, according to Coinglass data. So far this month, BTC is up 1.98%.

Stablecoin Liquidity Remains Constrained

Analyst Darkfost highlighted thin liquidity as a primary concern. The stablecoin market cap has declined $14 billion since May, though it recovered $4 billion since September to reach approximately $270 billion. Despite this rebound, Darkfost characterized it as insufficient to drive Bitcoin toward new highs.

Large holders are adding stablecoins to Binance, but cautiously. Wallets sending over $1 million in stablecoins to the exchange increased their 30-day inflows to $30.5 billion from $21.7 billion a month earlier, a 40% rise. However, this remains well below the October 2025 peak of $61 billion, nearly double the current level.

Institutional Demand Cools

Spot Bitcoin ETF inflows have slowed significantly. After reaching $998.95 million on September 21—their largest daily inflow in almost a year—inflows contracted over five consecutive sessions. On September 30, the funds posted $148.69 million in net outflows, ending a nine-day inflow streak. Trading volume across the 12 major funds declined from $4.57 billion on September 21 to $1.97 billion on October 1.

Geopolitical Tensions Create Volatility

Regional conflict has already moved Bitcoin's price. On October 2, BTC rallied toward $87,000 before a tanker strike in the Strait of Hormuz reversed the gain. The strike marked the sixth tanker attack in a week. Meanwhile, Iran has indicated the strait remains closed until the US meets seven conditions from a June deal.

Bitcoin's round-the-clock trading means it absorbs weekend geopolitical news before traditional markets reopen, creating potential for continued volatility. The US has sent additional Patriot missile batteries to Saudi and Qatari energy sites and is deploying more warships and troops. Peace signals have also moved Bitcoin in the opposite direction, with the cryptocurrency climbing past $81,000 when Trump discussed ending the war.

Mt. Gox Deadline Looms

Mt. Gox's labeled wallets hold 34,387.51 BTC, worth approximately $2.88 billion according to Arkham data. Under the current court-approved deadline, the trustee must complete creditor repayments by October 31. The foundation previously announced an extension on October 27, 2025, just four days before the cutoff.

Two outcomes are possible: another extension would keep the coins off the market, while distributions could place BTC in the hands of creditors who may choose to sell. Notably, Bitcoin fell 3.69% in October 2025, marking its first losing October since 2018, suggesting seasonal strength cannot be taken for granted.
