The Federal Reserve's September 16 policy decision is shaping up as a critical moment for risk assets. Core CPI has declined to roughly 3% territory, yet markets are pricing in a 60-66% probability of a 25 basis point rate increase—the first hike since 2023.
July's core CPI reading came in at 2.5% year-over-year, down from 2.59% in June. Headline CPI sits around 3.4%, with easing pressures in energy and services contributing to the decline. The federal funds target range remains at 3.50%-3.75%, held steady after the July 28-29 meeting on a 9-3 vote.
The three dissents from that July vote signal genuine debate within the Federal Reserve's leadership. The September meeting will also include an updated Summary of Economic Projections and the dot plot, where individual Fed officials signal their rate expectations. Any meaningful shift in those projections could force markets to reprice the entire rate path through 2027.
Implications for Bitcoin and Crypto
Bitcoin has felt the pressure of shifting rate expectations throughout late August and early September. Higher rates typically strengthen the dollar and push up real yields, both of which tend to redirect capital away from assets that don't generate income.
Conversely, if the FOMC holds rates steady on September 16, the relief could be substantial. A hold would suggest the committee views inflation's downward trajectory as sufficient and would remove the near-term threat of further tightening.
The Press Conference Factor
The September 16 announcement is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. ET, followed by a press conference. The accompanying forward guidance from Fed leadership often matters more to traders than the rate decision itself. A rate hike paired with dovish guidance would be received differently than one accompanied by signals of additional tightening ahead.
The margin of any September vote will also be closely watched. A narrow decision would suggest the hawkish shift is fragile, while a commanding majority vote would indicate a more entrenched tightening bias.
