Bitcoin Faces Quantum Computing Risk, But Analyst Sees Opportunity

On-chain analyst Willy Woo has suggested that Bitcoin may lag behind the broader crypto and tech industry in implementing post-quantum security measures, but he views this potential vulnerability as a generational investment opportunity rather than a catastrophic outcome.

Quantum computers are expected to arrive between 2028 and 2030—a point researchers call Q-Day—when the technology could break the current cryptography that secures blockchain systems, banking infrastructure, and other digital platforms. Woo believes Bitcoin's planned seven-year migration timeline may not be completed before this deadline.

The central concern involves approximately 1.7 million bitcoins held by Bitcoin's creator Satoshi Nakamoto and other addresses rendered inaccessible through forgotten passwords and lost seed phrases. These coins are currently worth roughly $136 billion at market prices. If quantum computers breach Bitcoin's security, these dormant coins could theoretically be accessed and transferred, potentially flooding the market.

According to Glassnode, 6.26 million BTC—representing 31.2% of total supply—currently contain exposed public keys that quantum computers could theoretically exploit to reconstruct private keys.

Woo argues that even if such a scenario occurs, Bitcoin would not collapse entirely. He stated that a sharp price decline driven by Q-Day fears would represent a genuine buying opportunity, contrasting his view with analysts who predict Bitcoin could fall to zero if its cryptography is compromised.

Bitcoin's post-quantum migration faces challenges, including the lack of consensus required for major protocol upgrades. Coinbase has called for a dual-phased approach to accelerate the timeline. Two proposals—BIP-360 and SHRINCS—have emerged as potential migration pathways, with BIP-360 receiving Coinbase's backing. Prediction markets assigned a 59% probability to BIP-360 adoption by late October, suggesting market participants expect movement toward a dual migration strategy.

Critics, including Yuvi Lightman of Quantus Network, have dismissed Woo's outlook, arguing that compromised cryptography would render all digital assets unsafe regardless of Bitcoin's specific response.
