Bitcoin dropped 3.23% over the past 24 hours following remarks from Fed Chair Kevin Warsh at the Jackson Hole economic conference, with the broader crypto market cap falling 2.97%. Ethereum declined 2.7% while XRP fell 4.89% during the same period.
Warsh, speaking at his first Jackson Hole event as Fed Chair, emphasized that inflation remains above the Federal Reserve's 2% target. The PCE price index stands at 3.7% annually and 4.1% annualized over the past six months, according to data presented. Warsh noted that 54% of components in the PCE basket have risen 3% or more over the past year, indicating persistent inflationary pressures.
The Fed Chair acknowledged that the economy remains strong, with unemployment at 4.1% near multi-decade lows. However, he stated that financial conditions remain non-restrictive, citing relatively friendly lending standards, liberal credit markets, and tight credit spreads.
Warsh emphasized the Fed's commitment to reaching its 2% inflation objective with a predominant focus on prices, stating: We must be confident that underlying inflation is moving to our objective, clearly and at sufficient speed. Otherwise, we have work to do.
A key element of the speech involved Warsh discouraging markets from relying on Fed forward guidance, indicating this approach has overstayed its welcome.
Following the remarks, investors adopted a risk-off stance. Bitcoin retreated from the $80,000 resistance level to trade at $77,812. Ethereum fell to $2,420 and XRP to $1.36. Long liquidations across the crypto market totaled $350.94 million of $467.81 million in total liquidations.
