Bitcoin Falls Below $83,000 Amid Debate Over AI Threat to Wallet Security

Bitcoin dipped to approximately $82,300 before recovering to around $82,800 on October 8, marking a decline of roughly 4% from Tuesday's high near $86,600. The CoinDesk 100 index lost close to 2% over 24 hours.

The price movement coincided with renewed discussion about cryptographic security threats. Ethereum Foundation researcher Justin Drake posted on X, which received nearly 4 million views, urging the industry to prepare for what he called "bunker mode"—a gradual migration of funds to new addresses whose public keys have never been exposed. Drake argued that AI-driven advances in mathematics could break the elliptic-curve signatures securing bitcoin and ether wallets within "months not years," citing a batch of 722 mathematical results released by OpenAI this week.

The warning generated mixed responses. Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin acknowledged the risk from AI-accelerated math should be taken seriously but advised holders against rushing to move funds. Samson Mow, CEO of bitcoin technology firm Jan3, dismissed the concern as unnecessary panic.

In broader market developments, bond market pressure continued to weigh on risk assets. The 30-year Treasury yield rose 4 basis points to 5.71%, while the 10-year yield climbed to 5.32% ahead of a $22 billion 30-year bond auction. Minutes from the Federal Reserve's September meeting, released Wednesday, showed all 19 officials supported the previous month's interest-rate increase, with most viewing another increase as likely appropriate by year-end.

Derivatives data showed sellers maintaining an edge with a 24-hour taker long/short ratio of 48% to 52%. Crypto futures open interest fell 1% to $150 billion, while liquidations declined to $400 million from $548 million the previous day, suggesting de-risking rather than aggressive new bearish positioning.

Among individual tokens, Solana DeFi assets rebounded from Wednesday losses. Jupiter gained 15% over 24 hours, while Raydium and Jito each rose approximately 10% to 14%. Tokens associated with quantum-resistant cryptography saw gains following Drake's post, with Algorand leading the CoinDesk 100 with a 9% increase.
