Bitcoin Futures Open Interest Falls $1.4B as Spot Buyers Show Strength

Bitcoin futures open interest fell by approximately $1.4 billion through October 4, according to Glassnode's weekly market analysis. Futures exposure declined from $38.0 billion to $36.6 billion, representing a contraction in the derivatives market.

Alongside the futures decline, data showed structural shifts in market composition. Hot Capital Share, which tracks recently active capital over a three-month window, rose to 19.5% from 18.9%. The short-term-to-long-term holder supply ratio increased from 13.7% to 14.2%, indicating that younger coin cohorts represented a growing share of the active market.

Spot trading patterns showed improvement for buyers. Spot cumulative volume delta, which measures the balance between buyer- and seller-initiated trades, shifted from negative $102.8 million to positive $33.2 million. This improvement signals a shift toward buyer-initiated trading activity, though the metric does not quantify new investor capital entering the market.

Long-side funding payments on perpetual futures rose to $1.5 million from $926,400, indicating continued demand for bullish leveraged positions despite the overall decline in open interest. The remaining futures exposure remained near the upper edge of Glassnode's statistical range.

Market analysts noted that sustained spot buying represents the critical test for market resilience. Continued buyer demand could temper concerns about market fragility, while renewed selling pressure would strengthen such concerns. The growing share of recently active capital suggests price sensitivity remains elevated in the current environment.
