Bitcoin Futures Open Interest Hits $54.78 Billion as Options Traders Position for Volatility

Bitcoin's derivatives market is displaying signs of renewed trader engagement, with futures open interest reaching $54.78 billion as of the latest data. This represents approximately 672,480 BTC in outstanding contracts, up 1.46% over the preceding 24 hours, suggesting traders are expanding their derivatives exposure rather than reducing positions.

Binance commands the largest share of bitcoin futures open interest with 139,190 BTC valued at $11.33 billion, or 20.68% of the total. CME follows with 107,630 BTC worth $8.77 billion representing 16% of the market, while Bybit, Gate, MEXC, and Hyperliquid round out the major venues.

Exchange Activity Diverges

Exchange-level data reveals considerable variation in positioning changes. BingX recorded a 31.30% increase in 24-hour open interest, while Gate jumped 8.87%. Bybit, OKX, and CME all posted modest gains of 2.27%, 1.77%, and 1.49% respectively. Conversely, MEXC declined 5.32%, Kucoin slipped 0.61%, and Bitunix shed 1.24%.

Current open interest of $54.78 billion remains substantially below the $90 billion peak reached during the previous market rally, indicating speculative appetite has returned without approaching earlier extremes.

Options Market Shows Bullish Bias with Hedging Activity

Bitcoin's options market displays distinctly bullish positioning. Call options account for 59.35% of total options open interest with 289,312.28 BTC outstanding, compared to 198,131.61 BTC in puts. However, trading volume tells a different story: puts represented 52.07% of the preceding 24 hours' options volume, suggesting traders are holding bullish positions while simultaneously purchasing downside protection.

On Deribit, the largest concentrated positions cluster around near-term upside strikes. The October 30 expiration's $95,000 call leads with 19,951 BTC in open interest, followed by the $100,000 call with 11,284.3 BTC and the $90,000 call with 10,710.6 BTC. December contracts also feature significant positioning at $80,000, $100,000, and $120,000 call strikes.

Max Pain Levels Suggest Price Contest

With October 30 expiration approaching, max pain estimates cluster near bitcoin's prevailing price levels. Deribit indicates approximately $78,000 for that expiration, while Binance and OKX show roughly $81,000. December's major expiration presents different max pain levels: Deribit near $75,000 compared with approximately $81,000 on Binance and $78,000 on OKX.

Bitcoin's derivatives markets collectively reveal expanding futures exposure, call-heavy options positioning, and renewed demand for downside hedges concentrated in the $90,000 to $100,000 strike range.
