Bitcoin HWI, a widely used interface for connecting wallet software to hardware signing devices, is transitioning toward retirement after years of maintenance-mode operation, while the Rust-based successor proposed as its replacement has not yet demonstrated full production readiness.

The maintainer of Bitcoin Core's Hardware Wallet Interface announced on August 18 that HWI will no longer accept new devices or features beyond work required for MuSig2 support. Once that work is complete, the project expects to release a final version and enter minimal maintenance until a suitable replacement is available.

What HWI Does

HWI serves as a bridge allowing wallet software to interact with hardware signing devices including Ledger, Trezor, Coldcard, BitBox, and Jade. The interface enables wallet applications to discover hardware devices, retrieve public keys, display receive addresses, and send partially signed Bitcoin transactions to devices for approval and signing.

The Python-based tool was originally designed to bring hardware-wallet support to Bitcoin Core through an external-signer boundary rather than direct integration. Bitcoin Core's external-signer documentation lists HWI as its example implementation.

Migration Challenges

BHWI, a Rust implementation intended to preserve HWI's command-line interface, is presented as the potential successor. Its design using Rust could enable more reproducible distribution and use across multiple programming environments. However, BHWI remains labeled as work in progress and has not been deployed as a production replacement by any major wallet.

The transition presents distinct challenges for different projects. Some, like Specter Desktop, depend directly on HWI as a pinned library version. Others, including BTCPay Server Vault, wrap HWI's command line in their own software. Sparrow Wallet already maintains its own Java-based hardware wallet implementation, Lark, descended from HWI's original interface.

Each downstream project must independently validate that a replacement covers its required device models, operations, and release processes. Testing compatibility with specific wallet flows and across supported platforms remains each project's responsibility.

Support Matrix and Future Devices

HWI's current support spans multiple device manufacturers and models, with capabilities varying by device and firmware. The February 2024 release of HWI version 3.2.0 added BitBox02 Nova support, but downstream projects may not immediately adopt such updates.

Under HWI's new policy, teams encountering unsupported hardware models can maintain a fork, build separate integrations, or leave those combinations unsupported. The shared upstream path for adding new device support will no longer be available.

BHWI's current testing covers BitBox02, Coldcard, Jade, and Ledger models through differential tests against HWI 3.2.0, but documentation does not confirm production shipping by any wallet application nor address compatibility across HWI's complete device matrix and host platforms.
