Bitcoin Hashrate Rebounds Above One Zettahash Amid Mining Competition Recovery

Bitcoin's network hashrate has recovered above one zettahash per second, marking its highest level since March 3, according to BlocksBridge Consulting's October 22 Miner Weekly report. One zettahash is equivalent to 1,000 exahashes per second.

The report also recorded a 5.92% increase in mining difficulty on October 16, indicating renewed competition across the network despite some companies shifting infrastructure toward artificial intelligence.

Equipment Relocation vs. Exit

Corporate announcements about mining companies leaving the sector do not necessarily reflect changes in total network computing power. A facility can transition to alternative uses while its Bitcoin mining equipment is sold or relocated to other operators, allowing the machines to continue contributing hashrate elsewhere.

This distinction explains why corporate strategic announcements and network performance data can move in different directions without contradicting each other. A competitor's exit only reduces the competitive field if the associated computing capacity actually disappears rather than being deployed elsewhere.

Measuring Network Performance

Hashrate figures represent estimates of computational work rather than direct measurements from every miner on the network. These estimates use block production data and difficulty adjustments; short periods can fluctuate due to the randomness involved in block discovery. A seven-day average helps smooth such variations.

Mining difficulty is adjusted by the Bitcoin protocol every 2,016 blocks, targeting roughly a two-week interval. Faster block production generally leads to increased difficulty in the subsequent adjustment period.

Revenue and Profitability

Increased network hashrate does not automatically translate to higher revenue for individual miners. With other conditions unchanged, an operator contributing the same amount of work receives a smaller proportional share when total competing capacity expands.

Profitability depends on multiple factors including block reward and fee values, electricity costs, and equipment efficiency. A rise in Bitcoin hashrate therefore cannot alone determine whether individual miners' profit margins have improved or deteriorated.
