Bitcoin Long-Term Holders Reduce Holdings as Analysts Debate Rally Signal

Long-term Bitcoin holders have been selling their positions, with on-chain data showing a decline of approximately 345,000 BTC between July and October 2026. Some analysts view such distribution patterns as historically preceding rally phases, though the market remains divided on the interpretation.

Bitcoin Long-Term Holders Reduce Holdings as Analysts Debate Rally Signal

Bitcoin's most patient investors have been reducing their holdings in recent months. On-chain data shows that long-term holders—those holding coins for extended periods—have been quietly exiting positions, sparking debate among analysts about what this trend signals for future price movement.

Long-term holders (LTHs) are typically defined by on-chain analysts as investors holding Bitcoin for periods exceeding 155 days or, in stricter frameworks, longer than 18 months. Between July 30 and October 19, 2026, LTH supply fell by approximately 345,000 BTC, with balances declining from 16.41 million BTC to between 15.6 and 16.06 million BTC. As of late October, the 30-day change in LTH supply stood at minus 195,000 BTC on a net basis.

During this distribution period, Bitcoin traded in a range of roughly $80,000 to $82,800 after earlier peaks in the $83,000 to $87,000 range. By late October, the price had settled around $80,300 to $80,500.

The Selling Pace is Easing

A noteworthy detail emerges within the broader trend: the rate of selling has begun to slow. Early in October, long-term holders reduced their balances on 13 out of 15 trading days. Later in the month, that frequency dropped to 10 out of 15 days, with some days showing balance increases rather than decreases.

Additionally, despite recent outflows, LTH balances remain substantially elevated compared to December 2025, when they stood at approximately 14 million BTC. This suggests holders are trimming large positions rather than abandoning their Bitcoin entirely.

Historical Context for Distribution Patterns

The bullish interpretation of this data relies on historical precedent. Declines in LTH supply have often followed accumulation periods and have historically aligned with the onset of rally phases, according to analysts citing patterns from 2013, 2017, and 2021.

The optimistic reading holds that long-term holders accumulated heavily from late 2025 into mid-2026, pushing balances to a peak near 16.4 million BTC. Their current distribution, combined with easing outflows, could signal the early stages of a rally phase. The cautious interpretation notes that Bitcoin trades below its recent highs despite holder selling activity.

What to Monitor

Both perspectives agree on one point: seasoned investors appear to be taking profits rather than making a full market exit. The definitional distinction between the 155-day metric and 18-month holding window is important to note, as declines in one do not automatically confirm declines in the other.

Key indicators to watch include whether the 30-day LTH supply change continues declining toward zero and whether the share of distribution days continues falling below 10 out of 15 daily occurrences.
