Bitcoin Options Market Prices Muted CPI Impact as Put Bets Cluster at $76,000–$80,000

Bitcoin options markets are positioning for a contained reaction to this week's US inflation data, with traders clustering substantial put bets at lower price levels while short-term volatility expectations have declined.

According to Deribit, a crypto options exchange, October 16 expiring contracts carry approximately 15,502 BTC in outstanding options as of October 12, split between 9,128 BTC in puts and 6,373 BTC in calls. The put-to-call ratio stands at 1.43, with roughly $451 million in notional exposure concentrated in puts at $76,000, $78,000, and $80,000.

Downside Positioning Clusters Near Recent Lows

The largest concentration of puts sits at the $80,000 strike, carrying approximately $188 million in notional exposure. An additional $162 million is positioned at $78,000, while the $76,000 strike accounts for roughly $101 million. Combined, these three levels represent nearly 35% of the $1.29 billion options expiry, reflecting positioning near price levels Bitcoin touched during last week's decline.

Additional put exposure worth about $89 million is concentrated at $83,000, near Bitcoin's October 12 trading price of $83,450. Call exposure is more dispersed, with $94 million at $90,000, $70 million at $87,000, and $55 million at $85,000—collectively representing $219 million, less than half the amount at major downside strikes.

Deribit's maximum pain calculation, which indicates the settlement level minimizing aggregate intrinsic value, stands at $83,000.

Volatility Markets Price CPI as Limited Event

Bitcoin's seven-day at-the-money implied volatility declined to 32.01% from approximately 34.5% a week prior, suggesting market participants expect contained price movement from Wednesday's Consumer Price Index release. At this volatility level, conventional modeling suggests a weekly move of roughly $3,700, placing an expected range between approximately $79,750 and $87,150.

The volatility curve shows 30-day contracts at 34.66% implied volatility, compared to 37.29% for 90-day options and 38.24% for 180-day contracts, indicating expectations of greater uncertainty at longer durations.

Bitcoin perpetual-futures open interest fell 1.9% over the past week to approximately $29.33 billion, with annualized funding rates at 5.6%.

Economic Releases This Week

Market participants are assessing whether September inflation could prompt Federal Reserve action. The CPI report arrives Wednesday, October 16, at 8:30 a.m. Eastern Time, followed by producer-price inflation and retail-sales data Thursday, October 15. September headline inflation is forecast to accelerate to approximately 3.7% annually from 3.4% in August, with monthly core inflation expected to rise 0.2%.

Later-dated options expiring October 30 carry substantial upside exposure, with approximately $4.54 billion in call notional across $90,000, $95,000, and $100,000 strikes, indicating longer-term appetite for higher prices despite near-term downside positioning.
