Bitwise Chief Investment Officer Matt Hougan contends that Bitcoin will perform favorably across three distinct macroeconomic scenarios, driven by its scarcity, institutional adoption, and structural demand factors.
Hougan outlines his framework in three economic paths: an AI superabundance scenario where intelligence becomes cheap and widely available, prompting global investors to seek scarce assets like Bitcoin as hedges; an AI market crash scenario resembling the 2008 financial crisis, which would trigger massive government bailouts and money supply expansion favoring Bitcoin; and a baseline growth scenario with 3% GDP growth and 4% interest rates, sustained by continued ETF buying and corporate treasury holdings.
He acknowledges that Bitcoin may face challenging periods within these scenarios before outcomes resolve, citing the 2020 pandemic as an example when Bitcoin fell 50% before eventually rising approximately 20x.
Institutional Flows Supporting Long-Term Thesis
Hougan's outlook centers on institutional participation as a key driver of Bitcoin adoption across all economic paths. U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs have provided traditional investors direct exposure without wallet management requirements.
During the third quarter of 2026, these products recorded net inflows of $6 billion, according to SoSoValue data. Bitwise's large-cap crypto index gained 46.4% during the same quarter, with corporate treasury strategies and potential sovereign adoption identified as potential amplifiers for future inflows.
Fed Uncertainty and Inflation Pressures
Recent inflation data has complicated the Federal Reserve outlook. September consumer prices rose 3.7% year-on-year while core inflation increased 0.3% monthly, exceeding analyst expectations. Following the hotter-than-expected inflation report on October 14, Fed rate hike odds for the October 28 meeting stood at approximately 30%, according to CME FedWatch Tool data.
Hougan's thesis emphasizes that long-term adoption trends outweigh short-term market volatility, positioning Bitcoin on a structural upward trajectory.
