Bitcoin Price Faces a Familiar Trap as Whales Start Selling

Bitcoin is currently surrounded by rising bullish sentiment, driven by prominent industry forecasts and major corporate announcements. Robinhood recently suggested that additional countries could follow the U.S. Strategic Reserve, while Standard Chartered reiterated a $500,000 price target. Meanwhile, figures like CZ and Arthur Hayes have expressed expectations for continued growth, and Strategy announced a new $1.6 billion fund that could support further purchases.

Additional corporate accumulation has added to the narrative. Strive reportedly acquired over 1,100 BTC for $80 million, pushing its total holdings above 21,000 BTC. Strategy's recent funding move has also fueled speculation that its stash of roughly 840,000 BTC could eventually approach 900,000.

Despite this institutional accumulation and aggressive forecasts, address-balance data reveals a more cautious environment among smaller participants. The smallest tracked cohort, holding between 0.001 and 1 BTC, has not shown renewed accumulation in August, with holdings declining since late July. The 1 to 100 BTC group has also been distributing assets since mid-July.

Conversely, intermediate-sized participants have shown different behavior. Holders in the 100 to 1,000 BTC range began accumulating after a prolonged decline from May into early July. The 1,000 to 10,000 BTC cohort also showed renewed accumulation after selling through early August.

However, the largest cohort tells a contrasting story. Wallets holding between 10,000 and 100,000 BTC accumulated from mid-June through the recent rally, but their holdings peaked around August 21 before dropping sharply by August 24. This pattern indicates heavy distribution from the largest holders precisely as bullish market calls intensified, leaving the market to navigate a split in participant behavior.
