Bitcoin recovers 44% from June low as historical patterns raise questions about sustainability

Bitcoin has recovered 44.2% from its June low of $58,535, climbing to around $84,400. This gain exceeds the historical average recovery of 29.7% from similar lows, suggesting strength in the current rally.

The June decline of approximately 53.06% draws parallels to 2021, when Bitcoin experienced a comparable 53.10% drop that was followed by another lower low. However, key differences may reduce selling pressure. Bitcoin's MVRV ratio stood at 1.10 at the June bottom, significantly lower than the 1.55 recorded in 2021, indicating a different cost basis for current holders.

Whether $58,535 holds as a cycle low remains pivotal. A break below this level would represent new territory and challenge the assumption that a local bottom has formed.

Institutional demand and supply dynamics

Institutional investors are supporting the recovery, with weekly Bitcoin ETF inflows reaching $2.39 billion and monthly flows exceeding $2.7 billion. Concurrently, exchange reserves are decreasing, tightening available supply and reducing selling pressure as prices rise.

Leverage presents a potential vulnerability. Open interest sits near $30 billion, with funding levels remaining relatively modest. A sharp spike in either metric could increase liquidation risks and trigger downward pressure.

Profit-taking concerns

Bitcoin's advance is creating new pressure as unrealized profits reach levels not seen since December 2024. The margin shifted from negative territory to above 40%, meaning more short-term holders now carry paper gains.

As profits expand, some investors may lock in gains, increasing realized supply. Similar profit-margin surges during past rallies have often preceded volatility. For the recovery to continue, sustained demand must absorb these sales.
