Bitcoin's Correlation With Gold Rises Above 50% as U.S. Debt Concerns Intensify

Bitcoin is increasingly behaving like gold rather than a technology stock, with its 90-day correlation to gold climbing above 50% while its correlation with the Nasdaq 100 has fallen to roughly 33%, according to Grayscale. The shift comes as U.S. public debt surpasses $40 trillion.

Bitcoin's Correlation With Gold Rises Above 50% as U.S. Debt Concerns Intensify

Bitcoin's relationship with traditional assets is shifting sharply, with the cryptocurrency increasingly treated as a scarce monetary asset rather than a high-beta technology investment, according to asset manager Grayscale.

Over the past 90 days, bitcoin's correlation with gold has climbed to more than 50%, compared to barely above zero at the start of 2026. During the same period, its correlation with the Nasdaq 100 has fallen from more than 60% to roughly 33%, Grayscale said, citing Bloomberg data through August 24.

Rising U.S. Debt Fuels Debasement Trade

The correlation shift coincides with elevated federal borrowing. Total U.S. public debt has crossed $40 trillion, with the Treasury expecting $739 billion in net marketable borrowing during the July-September quarter and $628 billion during October-December.

Higher debt levels have strengthened the debasement trade, in which investors seek assets with constrained supplies outside government-issued currencies and sovereign debt. Gold recently traded above $4,600, with futures reaching $4,730.90 on August 26, while bitcoin participated in the same movement.

Bitcoin's Fixed Supply in Focus

Bitcoin's appeal in this context stems from its fixed issuance structure. The cryptocurrency was designed with no central issuer and network consensus rules that constrain total supply to approximately 21 million BTC, distinguishing it from currencies whose supply can be expanded through fiscal or monetary policy.

This distinction has traditionally centered on precious metals like gold, but bitcoin's constrained issuance has increasingly placed it in the same conversation among investors concerned about currency debasement.

Correlation Shifts May Signal Changing Investor Perception

Grayscale noted that the latest divergence from growth stocks may indicate renewed attention to bitcoin's scarcity, monetary independence, and potential store-of-value characteristics. A sustained move toward gold-like behavior would strengthen bitcoin's diversification argument, though correlation relationships can change over time.
