Bitcoin's Correlation With Gold Strengthens as Tech Sensitivity Fades

Bitcoin's price behavior is shifting away from technology stocks and toward gold, a transition that could reshape how investors view the world's largest cryptocurrency.

Bitcoin's 90-day correlation with gold has climbed to approximately 0.57, up from 0.21 in March, according to Glassnode data. Over the same period, its correlation with the Nasdaq-100 fell to 0.22 from 0.57. Other market estimates place the bitcoin-gold correlation around 0.59, its highest level since 2020.

The divergence extends beyond these correlations. Gold's correlation with the U.S. 10-year Treasury yield stands near -0.41, while bitcoin's is roughly -0.17, indicating that bitcoin has recently been less sensitive to rising borrowing costs than gold.

Maturing as a Monetary Asset

ARK Invest founder Cathie Wood highlighted bitcoin's recent strength relative to gold in a recent interview. "This is promising, looks like a turn is in," Wood said. "It does look like a little bit of a breakthrough here." She noted that seeing bitcoin strengthen against gold was reassuring for the firm and reiterated ARK's bullish stance on bitcoin's longer-term role.

Wood characterized bitcoin as part of a technology revolution and a new global monetary asset class, framing it alongside gold as a potential insurance asset in a financial system facing technological disruption and counterparty risks.

The $83,000 Test Ahead

Market commentators have identified $83,000 as a key technical level for bitcoin. A clean break above this resistance could reinforce the argument that bitcoin is being repriced as an independent monetary asset. Failure to break above this level could leave the market vulnerable to pullback despite the improving correlation with gold.

If bitcoin continues to trade more like gold while remaining less exposed to rising yields, its price could respond differently to fiscal stress and monetary uncertainty compared to traditional risk assets.
