Bitcoin's Historical Election Cycle Drawdowns Renew Crash Concerns Ahead of November Vote

Analyst Ali Martinez documented Bitcoin drawdowns of 72%, 65%, 52%, and 27% across four midterm election cycles since 2010, reigniting debate over whether elections influence cryptocurrency prices. However, the pattern lacks evidence of causation, with other major events coinciding with previous losses.

Bitcoin's Historical Election Cycle Drawdowns Renew Crash Concerns Ahead of November Vote

Bitcoin's past performance around U.S. midterm elections has resurfaced as a point of analysis ahead of the November 3 vote. Analyst Ali Martinez documented drawdowns of 72% in 2010, 65% in 2014, 52% in 2018, and 27% in 2022 surrounding these election cycles, prompting renewed concerns about potential price declines.

The historical comparison, however, does not establish a causal relationship between elections and Bitcoin losses. Binance Research calculated annual losses of 56% in 2014, 73% in 2018, and 64% in 2022, while quarterly figures show mixed results: Bitcoin surged 391% in the final quarter of 2010 before falling 16.70% in 2014, 42.16% in 2018, and 14.75% in 2022.

Other Events Coincided with Previous Downturns

Significant market events overlapped with the documented drawdowns. The 2014 bear market coincided with the collapse of Mt. Gox, while a contentious Bitcoin Cash split intensified losses in 2018. In 2022, higher interest rates weakened speculative assets, and FTX filed for bankruptcy on November 11, three days after the midterm vote.

The timing of market bottoms also varied considerably. Bitcoin reached lows approximately 71 days after the 2014 election, 38 days after 2018's vote, and 13 days after 2022's, limiting any analysis that claims a fixed election-driven price timeline.

Current Price Positioning and Market Pressures

Bitcoin has recovered approximately 40% from its July 1 low near $57,850 to around $81,455 on October 22. Glassnode identified demand between $80,000 and $81,500, close to acquisition costs for U.S. spot exchange-traded funds and corporate treasuries. Resistance is positioned between $85,000 and $87,500, while downside references include $75,800 and $73,000.

U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded approximately $635.6 million in net outflows on October 22. Bitcoin also faces headwinds from the Federal Reserve's October 28 decision before election day, adding to the complexity of price analysis.

Price action will likely depend on whether institutional buyers defend nearby demand levels rather than any election-driven timeline, analysts suggest.
