Bitcoin's Recent Rally Above $87K Ends in Rejection and Market Liquidations

Bitcoin's recent surge past $87,000 came to a quick halt after facing repeated rejection within its current trading range, prompting analysts to reassess the market movement. Driven by positive macroeconomic developments in the United States during the business week, Bitcoin rallied to over $87,000 on Friday for the first time in approximately ten days.

However, the upward momentum stopped quickly, and the asset plummeted by several thousand dollars within hours. Bitcoin slumped below $84,000 on Friday evening, triggering nearly $600 million worth of liquidations across the broader cryptocurrency market.

Popular analyst Ali Martinez stated that the rally was compromised from the outset because whales sold more than 30,000 BTC as the price advanced. The $87,000 zone aligns with the upper boundary of a channel that has rejected the cryptocurrency repeatedly for over two weeks. Following the latest rejection, Martinez identified the lower end of the channel at approximately $82,500 as an immediate downside target, a level Bitcoin neared when it dropped to $83,500.

Data from Glassnode indicated that whales are not the only cohort disposing of holdings. Investors who accumulated Bitcoin 1 to 2 years ago at an average price of around $97,000, as well as those who bought over the past 6 to 12 months at $89,000, have been selling large quantities of their holdings. Glassnode noted that investors who bought the recent rally are selling the highest volume of coins per day this year, while those who bought the decline are not.

Ahead of the US jobs report on Friday, trader Daan Crypto Trades warned that Bitcoin open interest had climbed by more than $1.3 billion in a matter of days, driven largely by long positions added during the ascent. Daan pointed to the $85,500 to $86,000 region as a vulnerable zone where many of those positions were concentrated, warning that a drop below the area could squeeze out long positions. With Friday's major correction and nearly $600 million in liquidations primarily affecting longs, those late positions have largely been flushed from the market.
