Bitcoin experienced a significant pullback this week, sliding to below $80,400—its lowest price since September 21—before partially recovering to over $83,000 by press time. The decline followed gains earlier in August and September that had pushed the asset near $87,000.
The cryptocurrency's volatility began after trading near $86,000 last Friday. Early weakness saw Bitcoin dip below $84,000 before briefly recovering. Multiple failed attempts to breach $87,000 resistance preceded sharper declines, with the asset falling nearly $7,000 in a single day.
On a weekly basis, Bitcoin has dropped more than 3%. Ethereum declined over 8%, while XRP fell 8.6%. Other cryptocurrencies including ZEC, DOGE, LINK, XLM, and BCH recorded double-digit losses. The total crypto market capitalization fell over $150 billion from the previous Friday.
Market participants cited several factors for the downturn, including profit-taking, outflows from cryptocurrency ETFs, and macroeconomic developments. Government wallet transfers also sparked market concern.
Increased volatility is expected in the coming week as September consumer price index data is scheduled for release on Wednesday. The CPI report could significantly influence market direction.
Corporate Bitcoin Holdings Reach New Highs
Despite near-term price weakness, corporate bitcoin accumulation continued. Strategy announced its third consecutive purchase, bringing its total holdings to a new record of 848,000 BTC.
Metaplanet, the largest Asian corporate holder of Bitcoin, disclosed in its Q3 filing that it sold 10,000 BTC during the quarter but subsequently purchased 11,000 units at slightly higher prices. The company stated the trades were designed to demonstrate the liquidity and convertibility of its treasury.
