Bitcoin Slips Below $79K as $208M in Crypto Liquidations Hit Long Positions

Bitcoin price declined below the $79,000 level on Monday, retreating after a brief rally to $80,537 earlier in the day. The cryptocurrency traded near $78,785 by mid-morning EST, representing a 1% decline over the preceding 24 hours.

The pullback occurred as markets processed stronger-than-expected U.S. jobs data. Bitcoin had traded in a tight range between $79,600 and $80,000 before the sell-off triggered by a failed attempt to reclaim the $80,000 level near $79,700, driving the price down to $78,685.

Liquidations Skew Toward Long Positions

Derivative liquidations accelerated during the decline, with total liquidations across the cryptocurrency market reaching $208 million. Long positions accounted for $119 million of these liquidations, while short positions represented $20 million. In Bitcoin specifically, $55 million in leveraged positions were liquidated, with long positions accounting for $35 million.

Bitcoin's Range-Bound Consolidation

According to Bitfinex analysts, Bitcoin has maintained its market structure despite recent volatility, trading within an established range of $77,200 to $82,100. The previous high of $82,320 occurred on September 3 before the pullback to the current range.

Analysts noted that Bitcoin's current trajectory reflects consolidation with an upside bias rather than a confirmed breakout. They identified key factors supporting Bitcoin's position, including recent exchange-traded fund inflows, expanding stablecoin supply, and persistent cryptocurrency demand.

Conditions for Further Advance

Bitfinex analysts cited Treasury yields and liquidity conditions as determining factors for Bitcoin's near-term direction. They emphasized that sustained conditions for a breakout above the current range would require continued spot ETF inflows and expanding stablecoin supply, while elevated U.S. Treasury yields and uncertain Federal Reserve rate policy remain constraints on upside momentum.

The market capitalization of Bitcoin fell to $1.58 trillion following the decline, as traders reassessed the durability of recent gains.
