Bitcoin Steadies Near $86,000 as Oil Prices Fall and Risk Appetite Strengthens

Bitcoin traded near $86,000 after recovering from Asian-session lows of around $85,000, as falling oil prices and strong stock markets bolstered risk appetite across financial markets.

WTI crude futures fell more than 2% to below $90 a barrel, extending a retreat from a recent high of $106. The decline followed reports that Iran was willing to reopen the Strait of Hormuz within seven days if the U.S. eased its blockade. Lower oil prices could help ease inflationary pressures and weaken the case for additional Federal Reserve interest-rate increases in coming months.

Bitcoin prices convincingly broke above the May high on Monday, reinforcing the bullish trend. The CoinDesk 20 Index rose 2.2% over 24 hours. U.S.-listed spot bitcoin ETFs attracted nearly $1 billion in inflows on Monday, their largest single-day haul since October last year.

Alex Kuptsikevich, chief market analyst at FxPro, attributed the market gains to a combination of factors: "The crypto market gained ground against the backdrop of a sharp rise in the Nasdaq index. Falling oil prices and US government bond yields, rising global stock markets and optimism regarding US-China negotiations supported risk appetite."

Derivatives Point to Short Covering

Futures data suggest the cryptocurrency rally was driven largely by short covering rather than strong new long positions. Total crypto futures volume jumped 38% to $292 billion in the past 24 hours, while open interest rose just 1% to $157 billion. Combined with $768 million in liquidations, mostly shorts, this pattern suggests a short squeeze rather than fresh, conviction-driven positioning.

Bitcoin's futures open interest stands at 716,000 BTC, the most since August 25, though it remains well below the roughly 750,000 BTC average seen from April to July. Cumulative volume delta remained negative across major cryptocurrencies, indicating aggressive sell-side taker flow in futures outpaced aggressive buy-side flow even as prices rose.

Broader Market Activity

The broader cryptocurrency market remained buoyant, with smaller tokens posting strong gains. PEPE, DOGE and SHIB were among the 10 best-performing cryptocurrencies over the past 24 hours. Dogecoin's open interest surged 10% in a day, the biggest jump among the top-10 coins.

Volatility gauges remained contained despite the pace of Bitcoin and Ethereum's rally. The 30-day annualized implied volatility indexes remain well short of peaks hit in February and early June, suggesting traders see current conditions as orderly.

ZetaChain Votes to Retire Blockchain

In token governance news, ZetaChain holders voted to retire the blockchain entirely and move the ZETA token to Solana. The proposal passed with more than 99% in favor on 58% turnout, well clear of the 40% needed.

ZetaChain debuted in 2023 with $27 million in funding to enable value transfers between blockchains. Three years later, the chain's token sits at number 313 by market value, worth about $90 million. The team cited ongoing operating costs and security patches required by the Cosmos SDK toolkit as reasons for the closure.

ZetaChain developers built Anuma, an AI application introduced in February, which they claim has more than 300,000 users. Moving to Solana allows Anuma to inherit Solana's existing user base, wallets and exchange listings rather than asking users to bridge into a relatively obscure chain. Holders will lock tokens in exchange for credits to spend inside Anuma, converting ZETA from a network stake into prepaid app usage.

ZETA doubled off roughly 4 cents into Sunday's vote, touched 7 cents, and fell 16% over 24 hours to just under 6 cents. Nearly $117 million changed hands in a day against that $90 million market value. One more governance vote is still needed before the migration actually occurs.
