Bitcoin Still 34% Below Peak Set Before $19B Liquidation Crash

Bitcoin has failed to recover to its record high set one year before a major liquidation event. The cryptocurrency is trading near $82,700, approximately 34% below the $126,080 peak reached on October 6, 2025, four days before the crash.

The October 2025 Liquidation Event

On October 10, 2025, a massive wave of forced position closures swept through crypto markets. Over $19 billion in leveraged bets held by approximately 1.6 million traders were liquidated over two days, according to Coinglass data.

The damage concentrated heavily in a narrow timeframe. Roughly 70% of the liquidations, about $6.93 billion, occurred within a 40-minute window. A single minute at 21:15 UTC saw $3.21 billion in positions liquidated. Bitcoin fell from $122,574 to $104,782 during this period.

The stablecoin USDe briefly traded at $0.65, and Binance subsequently paid out over $283 million to affected users. Of the total losses, $16.7 billion came from long positions, while perpetual futures open interest collapsed 43% in a single day, dropping from $217 billion to $123 billion.

Market Recovery and Current State

Bitcoin's market capitalization stood at approximately $2.43 trillion on October 10, 2025, but has since declined to roughly $1.66 trillion, a loss of about $738 billion.

Spot bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) now hold a significant portion of the market. This week, these ETFs shed over $700 million, with two-day outflows approaching $1 billion.

Leverage Remains a Market Factor

The October 2025 crash did not eliminate leverage from cryptocurrency markets; subsequent volatility episodes have occurred. In 2026, a January 20 liquidation event and a February 1 event erased approximately $2.2 billion in positions within 24 hours.

Current market positioning shows approximately $3.3 billion in bitcoin short positions vulnerable to liquidation if prices reach $85,000. Recent price movements to a month-to-date low of $80,308, followed by a bounce to $83,000, followed a similar pattern to the earlier crash, with crowded long positions liquidating first and then short positions being squeezed.

Bitcoin's price has not reclaimed the high set before the October crash, with every subsequent rally encountering resistance tied to the memory of that liquidation event.
