Bitcoin has surged to an eight-month high following a sharp rally that liquidated over $1 billion in positions across the cryptocurrency derivatives market.
The cryptocurrency reached an intraday high of $87,000, pushing its total market cap toward $1.8 trillion. The move extends Bitcoin's recovery from approximately $75,000 the previous week and marks its highest price since January.
Massive Short Liquidations Fuel Rally
Data from CoinGlass shows that roughly $1 billion worth of positions were liquidated during the move, with approximately $900 million originating from short positions. More than 139,000 traders saw their positions force-closed, with the largest single liquidation occurring on Hyperliquid at slightly over $20 million.
The imbalance between short and total liquidations created a short squeeze effect, as forced closures of bearish positions provided additional upward momentum. Traders holding short positions were caught off-guard by the rapid price movement, which cleared several resistance levels in quick succession.
Resistance Levels and Price Targets Ahead
Technical analysts point to $88,000 as the next potential resistance area, with $90,000 and $95,000 potentially coming into focus if Bitcoin maintains its momentum. The region around $80,000 to $82,000 has now emerged as an important support zone.
A key technical development cited by analysts is Bitcoin's reclaim of its 50-week moving average, currently near $78,700, which some view as a significant milestone for the ongoing recovery.
