Bitcoin Tests $80,000 as Fed Chair Warsh Signals Sticky Inflation Concerns

Bitcoin faces a critical test around the $80,000 level following Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh's Jackson Hole speech on inflation metrics. The cryptocurrency slipped below this threshold during Asian trading after reaching $81,280 overnight, with prices moving around $79,000 as of publication.

Warsh highlighted that 54% of the 199 components in the personal consumption expenditures basket have risen faster than 3% over the past 12 months. An additional 49% of components ran above 3% annualized over six months. While the 12-month breadth measure has improved from a post-pandemic peak of nearly 77%, it remains significantly above the 32% average recorded during the two decades before the pandemic. Warsh also reported six-month annualized headline inflation at 4.1%.

The Federal Reserve Chair affirmed that the Fed's target remains 2% PCE inflation, described labor markets as consistent with full employment, and found few signs of restraint in credit and loan markets. He characterized broad financial conditions as difficult to justify as restrictive, a framework that complicates the case for near-term policy relief.

ETF Demand Provides Near-Term Support

US-traded spot Bitcoin ETFs absorbed over $1.1 billion across four completed trading sessions through August 27. BlackRock's iShares Bitcoin Trust accounted for approximately 86% of total inflows, with daily net inflows of $337.6 million on August 24, $314.3 million on August 25, $232.2 million on August 26, and $242.3 million on August 27.

The concentrated nature of these inflows raises durability questions. A sustained recovery above $80,000 would require continued demand beyond the dominant iShares product, continued inflows after Warsh's speech, and subsequent inflation data that materially reduces the breadth readings Warsh emphasized.

Treasury Operations and Rate Pressures

The two-year Treasury yield rose to 4.29% from 4.22% following the speech, reflecting near-term policy expectations. The 10-year yield edged to 4.69% from 4.67%, while the 30-year yield slipped to 5.17% from 5.19%.

The U.S. Treasury announced it will increase maximum liquidity-support buybacks in the 10-to-20-year and 20-to-30-year sectors from $2 billion to at least $4 billion per operation beginning September 9 through November 4. Treasury has characterized these operations as regular debt-management activities financed through its broader issuance program, rather than acute stress support or monetary easing.

Conditions for Sustained Recovery

Bitcoin's immediate support case depends on three observable tests: whether ETF inflows continue after the policy speech, whether demand spreads beyond concentrated products, and whether the cryptocurrency can reclaim and maintain $80,000. Passing all three would suggest persistent absorption of volatility, while failing them would characterize recent inflows as temporary positioning support.

Warsh's framework establishes a repeatable policy test based on inflation breadth metrics. With inflation remaining above target across a broad basket of components and financial conditions not broadly restrictive, the conditions for sustained policy relief remain absent. Bitcoin's ability to sustain gains above $80,000 will ultimately depend on whether crypto-specific demand can absorb volatility created when these policy tests shift.
