Fidelity's director of global macro Jurrien Timmer has revised his bitcoin outlook after the asset approached $80,000, identifying what he characterizes as a double bottom formation with a potential target of $100,000.
Timmer's analysis identifies two troughs at $60,033 and $57,742, with $80,554 marking a key resistance level. According to technical analysis methodology, a double bottom's target is calculated by adding the pattern's depth to the breakout level, projecting to roughly $103,400 from the lower trough and approximately $107,900 from the May high of $82,807. Timmer's $100,000 estimate represents a conservative version of this calculation.
A Reversed Call
Timmer's current perspective contrasts sharply with his stance nine months earlier. In December 2025, he had cautioned that bitcoin "may well have ended another 4-year cycle halving phase" and suggested 2026 could be "bitcoin's year off," citing historical crypto winter patterns that typically last about a year. At that time, he placed support in the $65,000 to $75,000 range.
Bitcoin subsequently fell below that support band, reaching $60,000 in early February and $57,800 in late June. However, after breaking above $80,000, Timmer stated: "I'm sensing that a new 4-year cycle bull market is underway."
Market Positioning
Bitcoin closed the week of September 14 at $81,178 and was trading near $84,000 as of late September, representing the highest level since the week of January 19 when it finished at $86,670.
Prediction market traders at Kalshi have priced a move above $100,000 in 2026 at 39 cents, down from 41 cents a day earlier. The $110,000 contract trades at 20 cents. Short-term bets have cooled more significantly, with Kalshi's September contract on bitcoin topping $87,500 falling to 22 cents from 35 cents over a 24-hour period.
U.S. spot bitcoin exchange-traded funds recorded $134 million in inflows on September 25, marking their seventh consecutive day of inflows, with Blackrock's IBIT leading the purchases.
