Bitcoin Time Capsules Resurface as 5,419 Dormant BTC Moved in September

Long-idle bitcoin continued to stir in September, with 5,419.45 BTC valued at $457.23 million shifting to new addresses. While the overall pace cooled compared to the record-setting dormant spending seen in August, September's activity remained comfortably above July's tally.

According to logs from btcparser.com, wallets created between 2010 and 2017 moved roughly 5,401.841 BTC across 94 distinct transfers during the 30-day month. The youngest address involved was about nine years and two months old, while the two oldest dated back to March 2, 2010, making them over 16 years old.

2016 Wallets Lead the Movement

Wallets created in 2016 led activity last month, shifting 1,556.53 BTC across 13 transactions. These were followed by 2013 wallets, which dispersed roughly 888.91 BTC through 26 separate transfers. Additionally, 14 transfers from wallets created in 2010 moved 600 BTC that originated as early block rewards.

Data indicates that roughly 57 of the month's transfers involved coins between 12 and 16 years old moving for the first time since their respective wallets were created. While the average spend was 57.65 BTC, the most typical transfer hovered around 25 BTC, with a few larger spends pulling the average higher.

Transaction Patterns and Market Context

Sept. 5 recorded the busiest day of the month by number of transfers with approximately 24, while the following day saw the highest volume of bitcoin spent, with 1,620.39 BTC shifted. Observers note that these structured awakenings resemble systematic consolidation by sophisticated holders and early miners methodically reclaiming old rewards, rather than scattered reactivation.

Separately, bitcoin traded between $84,614 and $84,887 on Saturday, Oct. 3, 2026, following a sharp rejection from a 24-hour intraday high.
