Bitcoin Volatility Masks Broader Crypto Weakness as 80% of Major Tokens Decline

Bitcoin has spent October swinging between $80,000 and $84,000, with each recovery failing to establish sustained momentum. While the largest cryptocurrency posted a modest 0.71% weekly decline, the damage beneath the surface is considerably worse.

According to Bitunix's October 17–23 Token Pulse report, approximately 80% of the 300 largest tokens tracked lost value during the period. The median weekly return across these tokens was −3.98%, significantly underperforming Bitcoin. Cardano, NEAR, and SUI each fell more than 5%, while Starknet's STRK plunged 39.2%.

Uncertainty Drives Price Swings

Two major factors have driven Bitcoin's reversals. Early October commentary about labor-market weakness sparked expectations of further Federal Reserve rate cuts, encouraging buying interest in risk assets. Stronger economic data subsequently dampened those expectations, reversing gains as investors reassessed the outlook for monetary easing.

Institutional flows have proven equally unpredictable. US spot Bitcoin ETFs saw inflows of $526.7 million on October 19 and $524.8 million on October 21, followed by a $635.6 million outflow the next day—a $1.16 billion swing between consecutive sessions.

Broader Market Headwinds

Pressure extends beyond cryptocurrency. Technology stocks including Intel (down 10.52%) and Micron (down 8.05%) posted steep declines during the period. The Nasdaq fell 2.6% on October 22 as investors questioned the costs associated with artificial intelligence infrastructure buildout.

Energy markets added complexity to the outlook. Brent crude gained 6.8% over the reporting period amid escalating Middle East tensions, potentially supporting elevated inflation that could constrain the Federal Reserve's ability to cut rates further. Core PCE inflation stood at 3.0% annually in August, above the Fed's 2% target.

Even cryptocurrency's few winners showed fragility. Lighter's LIT gained 12.19% over seven days but dropped more than 11% in the final 24 hours despite stronger platform activity and announced plans to seek US derivatives registration.

Path Forward

The Federal Reserve's October 27–28 meeting and the September core PCE inflation report on October 29 represent critical tests for market direction. Cooler inflation or reassuring Fed guidance could support another Bitcoin challenge toward $84,000–$85,000. Conversely, persistent inflation, further ETF withdrawals, or additional technology-sector weakness could bring $80,000 back into focus.

Repeated buying near $80,000 demonstrates continued interest at lower prices, yet sharp reversals suggest buyers have not yet established control over the market's direction.
