BitGo has partnered with Core Chain to introduce a tokenization framework for real-world assets (RWAs), bringing institutional custody to physical gold, real estate, and fine art on the blockchain.
The collaboration highlights the growing importance of the legal and custody layer in asset tokenization. Unlike native crypto tokens, physical assets require secure custody, documentation, valuation, legal rights, and clear rules governing access and trading.
The Role of Custody in Tokenized Assets
Tokenizing a physical asset involves more than simply creating a blockchain token to represent it. Without proper holding, protection, and documentation of the underlying asset, a token risks becoming a digital claim with weak backing.
BitGo's involvement provides a custody-first approach to the Core Chain launch. Each asset class brings unique operational challenges:
- Physical Gold: Generally easier to integrate due to existing financial wrappers and vaulting systems.
- Real Estate: Involves complex local laws, ownership rights, liquidity considerations, and transfer restrictions.
- Fine Art: Presents specialized challenges regarding authenticity, valuation, secure storage, and market access.
Institutional Push for Core Chain
For Core Chain, the partnership expands its use cases beyond standard crypto trading and DeFi deposits, positioning the network as infrastructure for tokenized traditional assets.
The broader digital asset market continues to see institutional demand for tokenization as a method to enhance settlement, transparency, and collateral management. While the partnership does not instantly make every building, gold bar, or artwork liquid on-chain, it represents ongoing development by institutional custody providers and blockchain networks to build structured access to traditional asset markets over time.
