BitMEX Co-Founder Arthur Hayes Exits Retirement to Lead AI Blockchain Venture Flop Labs

BitMEX co-founder Arthur Hayes has announced his return from retirement to assume leadership of Flop Labs, the development entity creating Flop Network, a blockchain infrastructure built for AI agents. Hayes made the announcement official in an August 19 Substack publication, disclosing that he personally financed the development team to remove the need for presale funding rounds.

Flop Network Architecture and Mechanics

Flop Network is designed as a decentralized computing platform where AI agents can pay for computational resources and memory storage using its native cryptocurrency, FLOP. The network prices computational tasks using floating-point operations per time unit, aiming to create a universal pricing mechanism across diverse AI architectures and hardware configurations.

Individuals with internet-connected computing devices can contribute processing power. Miners earn FLOP tokens via block rewards and inference fees for executing AI computational tasks under a Proof of Useful Inference framework. Additionally, Hayes noted that decentralized storage infrastructure will be used to maintain historical memory data for autonomous AI agents, preventing centralized entities from restricting or deleting operational histories.

Token Economics and Distribution Schedule

The FLOP token utilizes a fair launch model with zero presale rounds and no allocations for venture capital firms. Approximately 20% of the total FLOP token supply is designated for testnet contributors across a 10-year distribution period. While the total token supply and exact qualification criteria have not been disclosed, a major FLOP token airdrop is scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2026, followed by the network genesis block launch in the first quarter of 2027.

As of August 19, the initiative has not yet published an official white paper, completed security audits, or released a token contract. Furthermore, technical details regarding the underlying blockchain infrastructure and validation mechanisms remain unpublished as the project prepares to enter a market where stablecoins currently dominate agent-driven transactions.
