Matt Hougan, Chief Investment Officer at Bitwise, has identified his "Mount Rushmore" of crypto assets as Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, and Chainlink. According to Hougan, these four assets remain essential exposure for investors seeking to capitalize on cryptocurrency's two primary macro themes: currency debasement and tokenization.
"It's hard to argue with those four assets not being part of your exposure," Hougan said of the basket.
Emerging Challengers
While Hougan maintains conviction in the original four, he acknowledges that other projects are making their case for inclusion. Hyperliquid is "making its case to be chiseled into the Mount Rushmore," while Zcash is positioning privacy as a key consideration and Venice is advocating for real-world artificial intelligence applications. Despite his bullishness on several downstream DeFi assets, Hougan views the original four as the core, broad-based play.
Chainlink's Tokenomics Challenge
Hougan addressed Chainlink specifically, acknowledging that despite positive developments in on-chain data and real-world asset integration, the token itself remains "questionable." He attributes current weakness to tokenomics that he describes as "the worst version of themselves for nearly every crypto asset."
Hougan believes regulatory pressure easing will drive progressive improvement in token economics across the industry. He compared his current outlook on Chainlink to his long-standing view of Uniswap before its tokenomics improved, suggesting that the underlying protocol business is sufficiently strong to support the token as its economics evolve.
Real-World Asset Integration
Hougan also highlighted growing interest in pairing tokens with real-world assets. He suggested potential applications include companies distributing rewards through tokenized stocks or fund companies marketing through tokenized funds. While he noted that current economics behind some of these paired-asset trades appear unusual and likely temporary, Hougan indicated that the broader concept of attaching tokens to real assets retains significant unexplored potential.
