Bitwise CIO Points to Q3 Gains as Signs of 'Crypto Spring'

Bitwise chief investment officer Matt Hougan characterized the third quarter as potentially "one of the best quarters in crypto's history," citing sharp price rebounds and growing onchain market activity as indicators of an emerging "crypto spring."

According to Bitwise's quarterly market review, the large-cap crypto index gained 46.4% during Q3. US spot Bitcoin ETF inflows totaled $6 billion, restoring year-to-date net flows to positive territory. Beyond price movements, the value of tokenized equities rose 65.5% to nearly $3.2 billion, while open interest in decentralized perpetual futures reached a record near $26 billion, with increasing exposure to stocks, commodities, foreign exchange, and pre-IPO shares.

Individual major cryptocurrencies posted significant quarterly gains: Bitcoin rose 42.3%, Ether increased 69.1%, and Solana climbed 59.2%. All 10 constituents of Bitwise's large-cap index posted double-digit quarterly gains, with Chainlink achieving the highest performance at 97.6%.

The rebound did not extend uniformly across the industry. Shares of Bitcoin mining companies Riot Platforms and Hut 8 fell 26.4% and 25.4% respectively during Q3, while Galaxy Digital declined 16.8%. The number of publicly listed companies holding Bitcoin dropped nearly 6% to 173, though their combined holdings grew 0.5%. Companies holding Ether fell to 35 from 40, despite increased combined holdings.

Despite the strong quarterly performance, Bitwise's large-cap crypto index remained down 6.2% year-to-date through September.

Market Recovery Debate

Analysts have been assessing whether the recent market downturn has ended. CryptoQuant indicated in September that technical and onchain indicators confirmed a new Bitcoin bull market, while some analysts cautioned that additional indicators were needed to confirm a cycle bottom. Hougan pointed to ETF flows and onchain activity as supporting evidence of potential recovery.

Forward-Looking Catalysts

Bitwise identified potential drivers for further growth. The firm expects the SEC's innovation exemption to attract billions in tokenized assets to blockchains including Ethereum, Solana, and NEAR, with tokenization expected to move from pilots to production in Q4.

The perpetual futures market is anticipated to expand further, with year-to-date trading volume exceeding $6 trillion across venues such as Hyperliquid and Lighter, up 42% from the prior year. Bitwise projects accelerated growth in the perpetual futures market as regulatory support emerges and US investors increase participation.
