BlackRock's BUIDL fund has climbed back to roughly $2.8 billion in assets, reclaiming its spot as the largest tokenized U.S. Treasury product after briefly ceding the title to Circle's USYC in March.
BUIDL, formally the USD Institutional Digital Liquidity Fund, holds about 18.5% of the $15.1 billion tokenized Treasury market. The product launched in March 2024 as BlackRock's first tokenized fund, built and administered by Securitize.
Market Position and Structure
The fund is deployed across eight blockchains, including Ethereum, Solana, Aptos, and BNB Chain. Each token targets a stable $1 net asset value and accrues yield daily through a rebase mechanism, allowing the money-market fund to trade and settle like a crypto asset around the clock.
BUIDL's underlying holdings consist of cash, short-term U.S. Treasury bills, and repurchase agreements. Moody's assigned the fund a top AAA-mf rating earlier this year.
Competitive Landscape
While BUIDL leads the tokenized Treasury category, its advantage is modest relative to the broader market. Circle's USYC briefly overtook BUIDL in March before BlackRock regained the top position by late August.
The tokenized Treasury market has continued expanding, with new entrants including Franklin Templeton and Ondo Finance competing for institutional capital. The $15.1 billion market represents traditional, yield-bearing government debt wrapped in blockchain infrastructure, attracting institutions seeking exposure to Treasury yields without traditional market constraints.
Infrastructure Development
Securitize, Ethena, and Uniswap Labs have built additional infrastructure around BUIDL this year, adding features such as round-the-clock atomic swaps and direct trading access to facilitate institutional adoption.
