Summer Mersinger is stepping down as CEO of the Blockchain Association, with her final day scheduled for October 16, 2026. She will remain as an advisor through the end of the year.
Kristin Smith, who founded and originally led the Blockchain Association starting in 2018, will assume the role of interim CEO following Mersinger's departure. Smith left the organization approximately 15 months ago to become president of the Solana Policy Institute, a position she will maintain while taking on temporary CEO duties at the Blockchain Association.
Background on Mersinger's Tenure
Mersinger joined the Blockchain Association in June 2025 after departing from the Commodity Futures Trading Commission, where she served as a commissioner. Her exit from the CFTC came three years before her second term was scheduled to conclude.
During her tenure at the Blockchain Association, Mersinger highlighted achievements including contributions to the GENIUS Act, which focused on stablecoin oversight, and work toward clearer regulatory frameworks at the Securities and Exchange Commission and CFTC.
Legislative Setback Precedes Departure
The announcement follows the Senate's failure to pass the Digital Asset Market Clarity Act last week. The proposed legislation did not secure sufficient support to advance through a procedural cloture vote. Industry analysts expect the measure will not receive further consideration before 2027.
The Blockchain Association had actively lobbied for the bill's passage. While Mersinger's exit announcement did not directly reference the legislative loss, the timing coincides with the setback for cryptocurrency advocates on Capitol Hill.
The organization has not disclosed details about Mersinger's future professional plans or whether it will launch a formal search for a permanent CEO successor.
