Global blockchain revenues are projected to decline approximately 30% year over year to $100 billion in 2026, down from roughly $140 billion in 2025, according to a new 1KX report. Despite the contraction, the decentralized finance sector continues to dominate, while a nascent institutional adoption segment is beginning to offset broader declines.
DeFi Strengthens Dominance Amid Overall Downturn
The DeFi and finance sector generated $65 billion in revenue during 2026, accounting for two-thirds of total blockchain revenues. This marks a significant concentration shift, up from 52% of revenues in 2022. Within DeFi, centralized exchanges and derivative venues led with 42% of category revenue, followed by stablecoin reserve income and yields at 29%, onchain user-paid fees at 13%, asset management and ETF-related fees at 7%, and prediction markets at 6%.
Blockchain infrastructure revenues fell to $22 billion, their lowest level since 2020. User-paid transaction fees now represent less than 3% of all blockchain revenues.
Institutional Adoption and Real-World Assets Surge
Countering the broader revenue decline, institutional adoption and economic use grew to represent 30% of total blockchain revenues. Economic adoption revenues rose by $2.9 billion in the first half of 2026 alone, with economic revenues overtaking infrastructure in the third quarter for the first time.
Real-world asset tokenization emerged as a major catalyst. RWA trading generated an estimated $1 billion in trading fees during the first half of 2026. Tokenized stocks represented 55% of perpetual volume in the third quarter, surpassing gold, while pre-IPO listings also emerged as a new asset class.
Tokenized stock volume on Robinhood Chain surpassed $13 billion in the third quarter, with more than 70% of trades occurring while U.S. stock exchanges were closed. Across all blockchains, spot RWA volume reached approximately $50 billion.
Prediction Markets and Payment Solutions Expand
Prediction markets expanded significantly, rising from near-zero revenue to an estimated $4 billion in 2026, generating $1.4 billion of a broader $1.6 billion surge in utility sector fees. Credit cards, trade finance, and other payment solutions contributed an additional $200 million. Stablecoin payment volumes reached all-time highs, with businesses involved in roughly 60% of stablecoin transfers in 2025.
Path to 2027 Growth
Looking ahead, the report projects institutional adoption and broader economic applications to drive the next growth cycle. Total revenues are anticipated to rebound as 24/7 equity trading, expanded RWA tokenization, and institutional stablecoin payment rails transition from early adoption toward mainstream financial integration. As regulatory frameworks finalize, institutional participation is expected to account for a dominant share of total market revenue.
