Binance's tokenized stock platform, bStocks, reached about $1 billion in total value locked in roughly three months, but BNB Chain's Thomas Chen still thinks the industry has barely started. Speaking at TOKEN2049 in Singapore, Chen described tokenization as sitting at the "bottom of the first inning."
His main argument was less about the milestone and more about what follows it. Chen said tokenized assets will succeed through distribution and real utility, not through speculative trading.
A fast start for bStocks
bStocks is Binance's platform for tokenized US equities and ETFs. It launched on June 11, 2026. Within approximately three to four months, the product had gathered around $1 billion in assets under management. That pace reportedly outran comparable product launches in the market.
The catalog grew quickly too. bStocks started with five listed assets and had expanded to nearly 100 by mid-October. Assets under management by mid-October were estimated at between $1 billion and $1.2 billion. Against a total tokenized equities market valued at $3-4 billion, that works out to an estimated 37-42% market share.
Cumulative trading volume on bStocks passed $40 billion, with meaningful trading happening outside traditional market hours. Cumulative 1:1 conversions on the platform topped $6 billion by mid-October. Conversions are where users swap between the token and its underlying representation, so they signal people actually moving value through the system rather than just watching a price chart.
Who is Thomas Chen, and why the timing matters
Chen is new to the chief business officer seat at BNB Chain. He took the role on September 28, 2026, and spoke at TOKEN2049 Singapore on October 8. TOKEN2049 ran on October 7-8, 2026.
Distribution is the real product
Chen's emphasis on distribution is the most interesting part of his message. Binance brings a large existing user base to the table, which helps explain how bStocks scaled so fast.
The utility point is the harder test. Trading volume above $40 billion shows demand, but trading alone is not the same as usefulness. Chen appears to be signaling that tokenized equities need roles beyond being another thing to flip.
What this means for the tokenization race
For investors and traders, the bStocks numbers point to genuine appetite for blockchain-based exposure to traditional stocks and ETFs. Round-the-clock trading appears to be a real draw, given the activity outside normal market hours.
A 37-42% estimated share suggests strong product-market fit for BNB Chain and Binance. It also means a large portion of the tokenized equities market depends heavily on a single platform's health and decisions.
The size of the overall market adds perspective. A $3-4 billion tokenized equities sector is meaningful in crypto terms but small next to the traditional stock markets it mirrors. That gap is exactly why Chen calls this the first inning.
