BNY just reported a third quarter that should make its investors comfortable. Revenue rose 12% from a year earlier, and earnings per share grew 24%.
How the numbers stack up
The revenue figure landed at the top of the range analysts had sketched out before the release. Consensus called for third-quarter revenue of roughly $5.56 billion. That implied year-over-year growth between 9.5% and 12%.
The earnings line is where things get more interesting. The consensus EPS estimate sat at $2.26, which would have marked an increase of about 18% from the prior year. BNY reported 24% EPS growth instead.
Heading into the report, expectations credited the anticipated growth to fee income, particularly from investment services. They also pointed to rising net interest income, helped by favorable equity markets and balance-sheet management.
Continuing a strong run
The third quarter follows a standout second quarter. In Q2 2026, BNY posted record revenue of $5.70 billion, up 13% year over year. EPS came in between $2.45 and $2.46, ahead of estimates.
Wall Street’s view going into the release was positive but measured. The consensus rating stood at Moderate Buy, with average price targets around $162. Some analysts trimmed their targets modestly ahead of earnings.
The tokenization subplot
On October 13 and 14, 2026, BNY and Citadel Securities completed the first transaction using tokenized assets on a major triparty repo platform. The trade involved a tokenized 2-year US Treasury note. It settled almost instantly on BNY’s private digital ledger.
BNY’s plans do not stop at one trade. The bank intends to offer tokenized deposits and digital cash. It also anticipates extended trading hours aimed at European and Asian clients in 2027.
What this means for BNY and the industry
The tokenization work is a longer-term bet. It does not show up in quarterly revenue yet in any meaningful way. But it positions BNY at the intersection of traditional finance and blockchain-based settlement. The trade ran on BNY’s private ledger, not a public blockchain.
Investors should watch whether BNY can turn these digital initiatives into fee-generating products by 2027 as planned. If tokenized deposits and digital cash gain traction with institutional clients, they could become a new revenue line on top of the investment services business that powered this quarter.
