Bond Market Surge Pressures Mortgages, Stocks, and Crypto Assets

The bond market is experiencing significant pressure as yields climb sharply across maturities. The 10-year Treasury yield surged to 5.18% during recent trading, reaching rates not seen since 2007, before the global financial crisis drove yields toward zero.

The climb in yields has been steep. The 10-year rate gained approximately 30 basis points over two days, including its largest one-day jump since April 9, 2025. Meanwhile, the average rate on a 30-year US mortgage has climbed to 7.45%, up 150 basis points over six months and the highest level since 2023.

Energy Prices and Inflation Concerns Drive Market Moves

Energy costs are contributing significantly to the upward pressure. Brent crude oil has moved back above $105 per barrel, while diesel prices have reached all-time highs. This timing is particularly consequential, as global diesel consumption is entering a seasonal period where demand typically increases by 2 million barrels per day.

The rise in fuel costs has intensified inflation expectations. US consumers now anticipate annual inflation of 4.6%, the third-highest reading in a year. Before the escalation in oil prices, the 10-year Treasury yield stood at 3.97%.

Federal Reserve Shifts to Hawkish Stance

The Federal Reserve recently increased interest rates by 25 basis points in a unanimous vote among all policymakers—the first unanimous decision in over a year. The central bank reaffirmed its focus on price stability and the 2% inflation target.

Market participants are now pricing approximately 100 basis points of additional rate increases by next summer, suggesting traders anticipate the Fed will need to take more aggressive action than the recent 25-basis-point move.

Ripple Effects Across Asset Classes

Higher Treasury yields are pressuring multiple asset classes simultaneously. Stock market momentum has slowed as yields rose, reversing earlier gains that had brought the US market close to record levels.

Gold and cryptocurrencies are also under pressure. With 10-year Treasury yields near 5.18%, investors can now earn substantially higher returns from government debt without taking on market risk, making the relative attractiveness of riskier assets less compelling. Bitcoin and other digital assets offer no fixed yield, making this shift in Treasury returns particularly significant for capital allocation.

Supply and Deficit Concerns

Additional pressure comes from the bond supply side. The US Treasury must issue substantial amounts of debt to finance the federal deficit. When supply outpaces demand at existing prices, bond prices fall and yields rise further. This dynamic has contributed to the sustained climb in yields despite efforts by the Treasury to stabilize the market.
