Boston Fed President Susan Collins Backs Rate Hike If Inflation Persists

Boston Fed President Susan Collins stated that supporting a Federal Reserve rate hike would be appropriate if inflation persists and shows no progress in falling toward the 2% target. In a note outlining her current monetary policy perspective, Collins emphasized that this step is key to ensuring price stability within a reasonable time frame.

Collins noted that maintaining the current federal funds rate target range requires continued evidence of inflation declining, unless a rate hike becomes necessary. Without such evidence, she said it becomes more difficult to rule out other inflationary forces, including the possibility that firms' price-setting behavior is inconsistent with 2% inflation. She added that the mildly restrictive policy stance places the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) in a good position to address evolving economic conditions. The FOMC has left interest rates unchanged at all meetings so far this year amid ongoing inflation concerns.

As a non-voting member this year, Collins joins other officials, such as Fed President Neel Kashkari, in signaling support for potential rate hikes if inflation persists. Additionally, Fed President Austan Goolsbee recently described inflation as the largest problem facing the U.S. economy.

Meanwhile, crypto traders continue to bet on a potential rate hike this year. Data from the prediction market platform Polymarket shows a 56% chance of a rate hike this year, down from a monthly high exceeding 70%. The odds declined earlier this month following a statement from Goldman Sachs indicating that markets remained too hawkish even as inflation cools, with July Consumer Price Index (CPI) and Producer Price Index (PPI) inflation prints coming in lower than the previous month.

Market attention now turns to the upcoming Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) inflation data, which is scheduled to release tomorrow and could influence the Fed's decision at the September FOMC meeting. Fed Chair Kevin Warsh is also scheduled to speak later this week to provide further insights into the central bank's monetary policy stance.
