The Central Bank of Brazil is implementing a new alert system designed to help banks and cryptocurrency exchanges identify and respond to cyberattacks that use crypto as an exit mechanism for stolen funds.
Developed in partnership with Hypernative, a company specializing in digital asset threat mitigation, the system has already undergone testing with undisclosed market participants. According to Regina Pedroso, executive director of the Brazilian Tokenization Association (ABToken), integration with participating institutions is scheduled to begin within two weeks.
Background on the Initiative
The Central Bank formed a working group to address cyberattacks after a significant incident in July 2025. During that attack, cybercriminals exploited a vulnerability in C&M software, a middleware company, and withdrew $180 million from Brazil's financial system. Portions of the stolen funds were converted to bitcoin and USDT and cashed out through cryptocurrency exchanges.
The primary concern driving the alert system's development is maintaining traceability of funds as they transition from traditional finance to the cryptocurrency sector.
Implementation and Participants
Major national crypto institutions including Foxbit and Mercado Bitcoin are among the companies expected to integrate the alert system. The tool will enable a coordinated network of exchanges and banking institutions to receive and distribute real-time alerts about emerging threats.
Pedroso noted that while the system has been tested and preliminary bulletins issued, the next phase requires participating associations and institutions to adapt their infrastructure to receive and distribute alerts effectively.
