Broadcom CEO Compares AI Investors to Casino Gamblers

Broadcom CEO Hock Tan compared many artificial intelligence investors to casino gamblers during remarks at a Singapore event, suggesting they lack understanding of their investments and have unrealistic expectations.

Tan's comments echo criticisms previously directed at cryptocurrency. In February 2023, late Berkshire Hathaway vice chairman Charlie Munger called crypto "a gambling contract with a nearly 100% edge for the house." UK lawmakers in 2023 described retail crypto trading as more closely resembling gambling than a financial service. Officials from the European Central Bank, India's central bank, and other regulators have made similar comparisons.

Tan focused his criticism on cash flowing into AI labs that currently operate at losses. He noted that while OpenAI generates approximately $50 billion in annual revenue at its current pace, high revenue does not guarantee profitability. He also criticized enterprises for "wasting money" on AI tokens—the billable units that text-based AI services charge for—comparing the practice to a child spending $10 in arcade tokens within minutes without learning anything.

Despite his skepticism about investor behavior, Tan expressed confidence in the underlying AI chip market. Broadcom forecasts $58 billion in AI chip sales for fiscal 2026, with projections rising to approximately $115 billion in 2027 and $230 billion in 2028. Demand is expected to exceed supply for at least two more years.

Tan identified funding constraints rather than hardware or power limitations as the primary potential obstacle to continued growth. Recent market volatility has already affected the sector: Broadcom's stock fell nearly 4% following a selloff in AI-related equities triggered by concerns about OpenAI's revenue gap.
