The collapse of Hunter Biden's LAPTOP memecoin has intensified debate within the crypto industry over how to address token launch failures. LAPTOP tumbled 99% from its Sept. 9 peak of $199.51, reaching a low of $0.192 before rebounding to around $0.24, according to market data.
The token's steep losses have drawn criticism from those who argue that high-profile token launches complicate regulatory discussions. Some industry observers caution that celebrity-driven tokens that generate significant retail losses invite stricter enforcement actions from regulators.
Transparency as an Alternative Approach
Nicolas Vaiman, CEO and co-founder of on-chain intelligence platform Bubblemaps, contends that the core issue is not regulatory gaps but lack of transparency. "What has been missing is accessibility, not regulation," Vaiman told Bitcoin.com News. "When traders can instantly see who is really behind a token, capital flows away from bad actors, and unprofitable scams stop generating the headlines that invite sweeping bans."
New Platform Features
To address this gap, Bubblemaps launched a revamped platform centered on a curated memecoin research feed. The system pre-screens new tokens to identify potential red flags before they reach users.
The platform distinguishes between two warning signals:
- Bundles: Wallets that purchased within the same block or seconds of launch, typically indicating sniping bots or team members pre-loading their own token
- Clusters: Wallets linked by shared funding sources or transfer patterns, often signaling insider supply held under different addresses
Each token receives a Bubblemaps score reflecting insider concentration levels. The platform also includes an integrated swap function, allowing users to analyze and trade tokens without leaving the application. According to Vaiman, these additions aim to make rug pull detection a standard part of token discovery rather than a specialist skill.
