Canada is taking steps to address its position as one of the only G7 nations unable to send a satellite into orbit without external assistance. Driven by deteriorating United States relations and SpaceX's decision to stop taking Falcon 9 bookings past 2028, the Canadian government has committed substantial funding to build a domestic space industry.

Government Funding and Infrastructure Investments

Under the federal Launch the North program, the Canadian government committed CAD $305 million to the space sector. Startups Canada Rocket Company, NordSpace, and Reaction Dynamics each received an initial installment of CAD $8.3 million in May 2026. Additionally, the federal government announced a $200 million investment in March for a Canada-owned spaceport.

Progress is already materializing across the country. NordSpace unveiled an orbital-class engine on August 19, marking a major step toward sovereign launch capabilities. Meanwhile, Maritime Launch successfully executed a hypersonic suborbital test from Canso, Nova Scotia, on June 10. According to the Centre for International Governance Innovation, both Maritime Launch and NordSpace anticipate reaching orbital flight within roughly a year.

Regulatory Framework and Commercial Projections

On April 21, 2026, Transport Minister Steven MacKinnon introduced the Canadian Space Launch Act, establishing the parameters for rockets to launch and re-enter Canadian airspace. Officials estimate that establishing a commercial launch industry could ultimately be worth as much as $40 billion.

Industry leaders are preparing for a significant surge in demand. Canada Rocket Company co-founder and CEO Hugh Kolias anticipates a “space super cycle” that could increase the number of satellites orbiting Earth from 18,000 to approximately 100,000 by 2030.

Toronto-based Canada Rocket Company is developing the R-2, a reusable medium-lift rocket featuring seven methane-and-oxygen engines designed to carry about 12,500 kilograms. The firm has raised $22.5 million primarily from Canadian investors, including the Business Development Bank of Canada, and expanded its staff from two employees in January to 25 in July by hiring back Canadian engineers from SpaceX, Blue Origin, and ArianeGroup.

Despite early momentum, industry participants acknowledge the scale of the challenge. Building a medium-lift rocket typically requires eight to ten years, a team of 300 to 500 engineers and technicians, and a budget of at least US$500 million.
