Cardano's Dijkstra testnet became public on October 21, according to an Intersect update from October 24, providing developers with a staging environment for the upcoming upgrade. The testnet currently runs Conway protocol version 11 with node 11.1.3.
The transition to protocol version 12 requires two additional steps: the release of a 11.2 node prerelease and a hard-fork initiation action via testnet governance. This phased approach allows pool operators and developers to establish compatibility with the current environment before protocol rules change.
Pool operators can access configuration files, connect to the network, and obtain test assets through a faucet. The staged rollout addresses a practical challenge in network upgrades: when multiple changes occur simultaneously, distinguishing application bugs from network-upgrade issues becomes difficult.
Beyond stake pools, the testnet allows exchanges, wallet providers, and application developers to verify their systems handle the present configuration correctly. This includes testing deposits and withdrawals, account balance accuracy, transaction signatures, and transaction acceptance under existing rules.
The public testnet represents a tangible preparation milestone but does not announce a mainnet activation date or guarantee specific outcomes. Its value lies in enabling independent teams to identify and resolve compatibility issues before they affect mainnet operations.
