Cardano has climbed approximately 42% since September 16, rising from roughly $0.19 to $0.27, yet the positioning behind this move has expanded faster than the dollar liquidity supporting it.
On October 5, large transactions exceeded historic levels, with 413 transactions of $100,000 or more marking the highest count since June 4. ADA reached an intraday high above $0.28 on October 6 but faced rejection at that level.
Derivatives Outpacing Liquidity
Between October 3 and October 5, ADA gained 10% while open interest in derivatives jumped 25% to $304 million. When measured in ADA terms alone, open interest increased 13%, indicating new positions were opened rather than existing shorts being closed.
On-chain dollar liquidity tells a different story. Cardano's stablecoin supply stood at $66.8 million, down 0.74% over the previous seven days. Seven-day decentralized exchange volume reached $42.6 million, up 147%, with total DeFi value locked at $71 million. This volume represents approximately 64% of the stablecoin base, meaning existing liquidity is turning over faster.
Open interest of $304 million is approximately 4.6 times larger than Cardano's on-chain stablecoin supply, a disparity that highlights the relationship between leverage and available liquidity.
The $0.28 Test
Whether ADA sustains levels near $0.28 will determine if this rally broadens or exposes excessive leverage. If ADA holds that zone with elevated open interest, remaining short positions could be forced to cover, validating the new long positions.
Conversely, if ADA stalls or reverses while funding remains positive and open interest stays high, a larger pool of leveraged longs faces liquidation risk. A larger decline could accelerate as on-chain selling pressure increases and whale activity diminishes.
Indicators to watch include whether stablecoin supply begins growing, whether DEX volume remains elevated beyond the initial price move, and whether funding rates stay moderate. These signals will clarify whether Cardano's rally reflects broadening support or leverage that has outpaced underlying liquidity.
