Cardano Stablecoin Offering 50% APR Draws Scrutiny Over Yield Sustainability

RealFi's USDrf, a dollar-pegged stablecoin on Cardano, is offering yields near 50% annually through Strike Finance, a Cardano perpetual futures exchange. The high rate has prompted Cardano founder Charles Hoskinson to call for a prediction market bet on whether deposits in Strike's vault reach $1 million. Bodega Market, a Cardano-based prediction platform, has since listed the market.

How the Stablecoin Works

USDrf is backed by off-chain real-world assets, according to RealFi. The backing consists primarily of direct lending to businesses, alongside U.S. Treasury bills and floating-rate bonds.

Holders can stake USDrf to receive sUSDrf, a yield-bearing token whose value fluctuates with the underlying portfolio. According to RealFi's GitHub code submission, protocol reserves absorb losses first, followed by sUSDrf holders. Strike Finance accepts sUSDrf as collateral for loans and currently lists a 49.31% APR, with roughly $119,200 in outstanding loans backed by the token.

The 50% yield contrasts sharply with traditional U.S. Treasury bills, which yielded approximately 4.3% for three-month instruments as of October 15, according to Federal Reserve data. Strike allows users to borrow up to 100% of their collateral's value through its loan-to-value ratio.

Concentration and Growth Questions

On October 17, Strike reported its vault held close to $100,000 of the stablecoin, followed by another $50,000 in deposits within an hour. However, ownership remains concentrated among a small number of holders. As of October 8, a single account controlled approximately 66% of RealFi's staking vault, which held roughly 2.58 million USDrf at that time.

The prediction market on whether Strike's vault reaches $1 million in deposits tests whether the stablecoin can attract funds beyond its largest holders and sustain current yield levels.

Unanswered Questions

RealFi's website does not provide details on how the yield behind the 50% APR is generated, leaving the sustainability of the rate unclear. Additionally, Strike's own token, STRIKE, trades approximately 77% below its August 2025 record high.
