Cboe Global Markets and S&P Dow Jones Indices announced a 25-year extension of their licensing agreement, giving Cboe exclusive rights to offer S&P 500 Index options through 2051. The extended deal includes language permitting the firms to collaborate on tokenized options contracts, signaling potential movement toward blockchain-based derivatives.
"Investor demand for exposure to U.S. equities continues to accelerate, and we see a future where every investor, everywhere, can access this benchmark in the format that best suits their needs," Catherine Clay, CEO of S&P Dow Jones Indices, said in a statement. The companies have not announced specific tokenized products, timelines, or implementation details.
Scale of the Market
S&P 500 Index options are among the world's most actively traded index derivatives. Cboe reported 970.6 million SPX options contracts traded in 2025, averaging 3.9 million per day. S&P Dow Jones Indices operates widely followed financial benchmarks underpinning trillions of dollars in investment products.
Tokenization Mechanics
Tokenization places traditional assets on blockchain rails, potentially enabling around-the-clock trading, faster settlement, and easier movement between trading, lending, and collateral systems. For derivatives, tokenized contracts can use smart contracts to automate collateral management, margin requirements, and settlement, potentially reducing intermediaries and accelerating capital redeployment after trades settle.
For options specifically, collateral can be locked on-chain with contract terms—including strike price and expiration—encoded into smart contracts, enabling automatic settlement based on market data.
Industry Movement
Major U.S. financial institutions are actively exploring tokenized markets. Nasdaq is working with Payward on tokenized, voting-enabled equities, while the New York Stock Exchange is developing a 24/7 venue for tokenized stocks and ETFs. The Depository Trust & Clearing Corporation, Wall Street's clearing and settlement backbone, is preparing to launch a tokenization service in October designed to support tokenized versions of assets held at DTC, which custodies more than $100 trillion in assets.
S&P Dow Jones Indices has previously licensed the S&P 500 to Centrifuge for a blockchain-based index fund and to Trade[XYZ] for a 24/7 perpetual futures product. The latest agreement suggests Cboe and S&P Dow Jones are considering extending this experimentation into derivatives markets.
