Cboe Extends S&P 500 Options Deal Through 2051, Opens Door to Tokenized Contracts

Cboe and S&P Dow Jones Indices have extended their licensing relationship for another 25 years, giving Cboe exclusive rights to offer S&P 500 Index options, or SPX, through 2051. The agreement, which extends a partnership dating back to 1983, includes provisions for the companies to explore products beyond traditional index derivatives, specifically naming tokenized options contracts.

No tokenized SPX product has been announced, and the agreement provides no details on blockchain implementation, launch timeline, settlement structure, or regulatory approach. The reference to tokenized options represents a possibility for future collaboration rather than a committed development plan.

Record Trading Volume Supports Agreement

The extended agreement comes as SPX options trading reached significant scale. Cboe reported 970.6 million SPX options contracts traded in 2025, marking a record and the fourth consecutive yearly record. Average daily volume reached 3.9 million contracts, with annual volume increasing 25% year-over-year.

SPX options have existed since 1983 and provide cash-settled exposure to S&P 500 movements. The new agreement preserves the existing arrangement while allowing both companies to consider how the franchise might evolve as financial markets experiment with tokenized assets.

Precedent for Blockchain-Based Index Products

S&P DJI has already licensed the S&P 500 for blockchain-based products, though none equivalent to an SPX option. Previous licenses include SPXA, a tokenized S&P 500 index fund through Centrifuge, and an S&P 500 perpetual contract on the DEX Hyperliquid for eligible non-U.S. traders licensed in March 2026.

Cboe has separately expanded its crypto derivatives business with cash-settled bitcoin and ether futures, bitcoin ETF index options, and other crypto-linked derivatives. The Sept. 29 announcement represents the first area where Cboe's traditional SPX business and its crypto derivatives expansion overlap on paper.

Complexity of Tokenized Options

A tokenized SPX-style option would require more infrastructure than simply placing an index price on blockchain. Options require strike prices, expiration terms, collateral arrangements, pricing data, and settlement rules. Any U.S. product would also need to fit within applicable regulatory and clearing frameworks. None of these implementation details were disclosed in the announcement.

For now, the concrete outcome of the agreement is Cboe's secured exclusive SPX options rights through 2051 after the franchise handled nearly 1 billion contracts in 2025. Tokenized options remain contemplated by the agreement but have not moved beyond exploratory discussions.
