Chainalysis Confirms Cyberattack Using AI Techniques, Customer Data Exposed

Blockchain analytics firm Chainalysis confirmed Friday that it suffered a cyberattack in which hackers used agentic AI to gain unauthorized access to its systems and internal tools.

The security breach exposed customer names, email addresses, user IDs, and organizational roles. According to Chainalysis's official statement, the investigation found no evidence of unauthorized access to investigation content, authentication credentials, or session tokens.

Chainalysis stated that its team is working with leading cybersecurity experts to investigate the activity, patch vulnerabilities, and harden its systems. The company proactively notified all customers and committed to keeping them updated on progress.

The firm did not specify the identity of the hackers or provide details about the agentic AI techniques used. Security experts note that agentic AI systems can autonomously identify vulnerabilities, coordinate multi-step attacks, and adapt in real time.

Separate From Binance Incident

Chainalysis stated that its security incident is not related to a separate major breach at cryptocurrency exchange Binance. The firm did not disclose the date of its cyberattack.

Both Chainalysis and Binance urged users to remain vigilant and prioritize security best practices.

North Korea-Linked Hacks Rise Sharply

Chainalysis reported that suspected North Korea-linked hacks account for nearly 89% of reported crypto hack losses so far this year, compared to 15% in 2021. The average reported loss per suspected North Korea-linked hack rose from $50.65 million in 2021 to $185.65 million in 2026 year-to-date, approximately 3.7 times larger.

From 2021 through October 29, 2026, suspected North Korea-linked hacks accounted for $13.24 billion of the $22.34 billion in reported losses, roughly 59%.
