Chainlink's CustodySync Taps Anchorage to Connect Custodied Assets to DeFi Lending

Chainlink has introduced CustodySync, a solution designed to let qualified custodians give institutional clients access to decentralized finance lending markets while assets remain in regulated custody. Anchorage is the official launch partner and the first qualified custodian to adopt the solution.

How CustodySync is designed to work

CustodySync synchronizes custody and lending systems throughout a loan's lifecycle. For custodians, the system promises faster deployment and lower operational overhead through custodian-managed controls. Lending markets gain independent, verifiable data and a consistent risk framework. Institutions, meanwhile, could put otherwise idle digital assets to work.

The capital gap behind the pitch

DeFi lending markets hold more than $80 billion, while approximately $700 billion in digital assets sits under custody, according to the source. By comparison, traditional assets under custody total roughly $250 trillion, meaning digital assets represent less than 0.5% of that figure.

Chainlink frames that gap as a substantial opportunity. Still, capital does not move simply because infrastructure exists. Institutions need dependable systems that address their regulatory and operational requirements.

Risk and coordination challenges

Custody and lending systems were not originally designed to work together. Even connected platforms can produce inconsistent loan valuations, potentially triggering premature or delayed liquidations that expose borrowers and lenders to financial risk.

CustodySync aims to improve coordination across those systems. Whether it delivers the reliability institutions require will be crucial to adoption.

Adoption will test the opportunity

For Chainlink, the pitch is straightforward: institutional investors should not have to choose between regulated custody and onchain lending. CustodySync could help bridge that divide, but meaningful adoption will determine whether the $700 billion opportunity becomes a reality.
