Chamath Palihapitiya Reverses Bitcoin Stance, Now Predicts AI-Driven Collapse to Zero

Billionaire investor Chamath Palihapitiya has reversed his long-standing bullish stance on bitcoin, now predicting the cryptocurrency will eventually reach zero after being compromised by artificial intelligence attacks. The shift represents a dramatic departure from his earlier advocacy, when he promoted bitcoin as "gold 2.0" and predicted prices reaching $1 million.

Speaking on Episode 304 of Peter Diamandis' Moonshots podcast, Palihapitiya stated: "I just think it's capped, and then I think eventually it gets hacked, and then it goes to zero." He cited three primary concerns about bitcoin's long-term viability: limited fungibility, inadequate financial privacy, and the possibility that increasingly sophisticated AI systems could compromise the network's security.

The Security Concern

Palihapitiya's central security argument focuses on the risk of an AI system cracking Bitcoin's cryptographic defenses or potentially accessing Satoshi Nakamoto's dormant holdings. He suggested that an attacker could steal such coins, short bitcoin, and announce the breach to profit from the resulting market decline. He also characterized a coordinated transition to quantum-resistant cryptography as "basically impossible" due to Bitcoin's contentious governance structure.

A History of Investment Reversals

The bitcoin reversal is not Palihapitiya's first dramatic shift in investment stance. He began accumulating bitcoin around 2012 and 2013 near $80 to $100 per coin, recommending allocating 1% of personal wealth to the asset as "schmuck insurance." By 2017, he predicted $100,000 bitcoin, and in January 2021, he forecast prices reaching $200,000 over five to 10 years.

However, Palihapitiya had disposed of substantial holdings long before his recent pessimistic prediction. In 2014, he used approximately 2,739 BTC, then worth $1.6 million, for a Lake Tahoe land purchase. During a November 2024 All-In podcast discussion, he described earlier bitcoin sales as a "$3 or $4 billion mistake… growing now." He stated he no longer holds bitcoin directly, having exchanged his exposure for equity in Digital Currency Group (DCG).

Similar reversals have marked his positions on other major investments. In January 2021, he publicly praised Tesla's prospects, but by September had disclosed selling his entire position. He also championed special purpose acquisition companies (SPACs) as superior vehicles for accessing public markets before later acknowledging that SPAC incentives were "totally and fundamentally misaligned."

Defending Intellectual Flexibility

Palihapitiya has defended his changing positions, declaring that he "reserves the right to change my mind." Portfolio management, liquidity needs, and evolving market conditions can influence investment decisions independently of broader assessments.
